Among the many beloved shapes in the world of Yixing teapots, the Jing Lan (井栏) teapot stands out for its simple geometry, classical charm, and deeply cultural roots. Named after the stone well railings it draws inspiration from, the Jing Lan teapot is a perfect blend of utility, symbolism, and timeless design.
The shape of the Jing Lan teapot is based on the circular stone railings that once surrounded wells in ancient China. It was Master Chen Hongshou (better known as Man Sheng) during the Qing dynasty who first captured this inspiration and transformed it into one of his celebrated Man Sheng Eighteen Styles. Collaborating with the renowned craftsman Yang Pengnian, he brought the Jing Lan teapot to life.
To Man Sheng, the deep well symbolized the vast ocean of knowledge—something to be drawn from continually, just as water sustains life. The teapot thus became a metaphor: a reminder that learning, like water from a well, is a source of lifelong nourishment.
Legend has it that the idea for the Jing Lan design came during a casual courtyard gathering. As Master Man Sheng and his close friend Yang Pengnian discussed teapots over tea, they noticed a maid drawing water from a deep stone well. The silhouette of the well and her posture sparked an idea—what if this moment could be translated into the form of a teapot? Inspired, Man Sheng sketched the design on a stone table. Pengnian refined it, and thus the first Jing Lan was born.
When Pengnian suggested the name “Water-Drawing Teapot”, Man Sheng replied, “This teapot came to me as naturally as the well itself. Let’s call it Jing Lan.” They both laughed, knowing they had created something timeless.
The Jing Lan teapot is considered a Guang Huo (光货) design—referring to clean, undecorated forms that rely entirely on proportion, balance, and clay quality. It has a rounded body, a circular handle, and a bridge-shaped lid knob. The smooth, uninterrupted surface allows the character of the Zisha clay to shine through.
To master such a form requires both artistic sensitivity and technical precision. The curvature of the body, the symmetry of the lid and spout, and the balance of the handle—all must be executed with harmony. There’s no ornamentation to hide behind; the beauty lies in restraint.
