What is a Dragon Egg Yixing Teapot?

This is one of our series posts on Shapes of the Yixing Teapot. If you are interested in more of them, please refer to this post for more on Yixing Teapot Shapes.

The Dragon Egg Yixing teapot—or “Long Dan” in Chinese—is a charming and symbolic teapot shape inspired by the mythical dragon. In Chinese culture, the dragon is more than just a creature—it’s a sacred symbol of power, fortune, and divine protection. The Dragon Egg teapot draws on this rich heritage, blending auspicious meaning with refined Zisha craftsmanship.

The earliest mention of the Dragon Egg shape dates back to the Ming Dynasty. As noted by Qing scholar Wu Dingmei in “The Ode to Yixing Teapots”, the form is described as:

“Perfectly round like a pellet, with an elongated body—thus, the Dragon Egg.”

A Form Rooted in Simplicity and Strength

The Dragon Egg teapot features a smooth, rounded body—slightly fuller at the bottom and narrower at the top—much like an egg about to hatch. Its silhouette is defined by flowing elliptical lines with no excessive ornamentation, giving it a sense of rustic honesty and unpretentious charm.

  • The lid knob is shaped like a bamboo hat (笠帽钮), perched elegantly on top—practical, balanced, and subtly playful.
  • A cut-lid design ensures excellent sealing and visual cohesion with the body—it feels like one continuous piece.
  • The tapered spout starts broad and narrows sharply toward the tip, allowing for a brisk and powerful pour.
  • Most versions feature a reverse-curved handle, soft in curve yet firm in grip, providing excellent balance during use.

This form is not only pleasing to the eye but also designed for everyday functionality. The stability, compactness, and smooth pour make it a favorite for both collectors and daily brewers.

A Vessel with Auspicious Meaning

In Chinese legend, the ninth son of the dragon—Pixiu (貔貅)—was said to hatch from a dragon egg. Pixiu is known as a guardian creature, believed to ward off evil and bring wealth and luck to its owner. Naming this teapot after the “dragon’s egg” is thus a nod to these blessings: protection, abundance, and peace at home.

Its adorably rounded shape, paired with the symbolism of new beginnings and prosperity, gives the Dragon Egg teapot a uniquely endearing presence—both whimsical and meaningful.
